Assessment Review by Trinity College of London

There is clearly a good rapport between the cast members, and this looks like a settled and comfortable group of actors. The exits and entrances were mostly fluid, but there were moments – the “party” in particular – where the interactions could be more dynamic.

All of the performances were detailed and the characters were inhabited and instantly identified and given clarity. Much of the dialogue was negotiated with good naturalness of pace and inflection, and even the clumsier exchanges in the writing were handled well.

Mention has been made of the choreography, which, if rather generic and unsurprising, was efficiently put together. But the staging within the scenes was mostly fluid and unobtrusive and scenes were set in a variety of places in this (dauntingly?) large stage. The set and props were often usefully functional, though at times the sets appeared over-fussy. The costumes were always apt and revealed character very well – from the elegance of the step-mum to the contemporary semi-grunge of the hero/heroine. There were some very effective colour designs – the restaurant for e.g. and the Indian dance. This was often a visual feast.

The lighting was mostly apt and well-directed. With an audience not comprising one grey-haired examiner, I’m sure this goes down a bomb. The performances are all assured and detailed and sustained and the final rebellion of the sisters against their mother was satisfying and dramatically engaging. All that said – and let’s face it, I am really not the target audience – this was performed and produced with a great deal of care and attention.
